How MAHLE connects 72,000 employees with an employee app

MAHLE is a leading international development partner and supplier to the automotive industry with around 72,000 employees worldwide. The challenge: to reach all employees — from production to administration — reliably and simultaneously, regardless of location, shift, or access to a PC.

With the Flip employee app, MAHLE has achieved exactly that: the app has been in use since autumn 2020 as the central communication channel for global internal communication. With Flip, global and country-specific intranet news, posts from group management and all press releases are distributed quickly and specifically – mobility and reach go hand in hand here.

Challenge

Before the introduction of the employee app, MAHLE lacked a unified channel to reach all employees simultaneously. Information was distributed via intranet, emails and notice boards, and often arrived late — particularly for production staff without a PC workstation. Communication was therefore slow, fragmented and dependent on physical touchpoints such as notice boards.

Solution

At the same time, the need to truly reach all employees grew — especially in production — via mobile devices, so that change-relevant information, short-notice adjustments and strategic decisions could reach everyone promptly and equitably. With Flip, MAHLE introduces a central, mobile AI-powered employee platform that complements the existing intranet and becomes the primary channel for internal communication.

Result

Through the employee app, MAHLE significantly improves the reach, speed and quality of internal communication: all employees — in the office, in production or abroad — are kept at the same level of information across teams and sites, and news or short-notice changes can be distributed via the app with minimal effort.

Before the Flip Experience

Delayed information, no unified channels

MAHLE uses Flip's app to standardise communication across country, site and functional boundaries. The key challenges before introducing the app were:

  • No way to reach all employees simultaneously — information was distributed via various channels (intranet, emails, notice boards) and often experienced significant delays.

  • Production staff received news late — for many without a PC workstation, regular access to digital channels was difficult.

  • A need to reach all employees via mobile devices — especially in production. Communication needed to become more mobile, faster and more accessible.

Without a central, mobile platform, MAHLE lacked a unified channel through which change-relevant information, short-notice adjustments and strategic decisions could reach everyone promptly and equitably.

'The employee app is very easy to use. This is appreciated not only by our employees, but also by our editors who create the content.'

The Flip Experience

Flip as a central AI-powered employee platform

MAHLE uses Flip as a mobile extension of the intranet, making the app simultaneously the primary channel for internal communication. The key features are:

  • Targeted distribution worldwide or limited to specific sites/countries — content such as info posts, images, videos and files can be shared with all or selected groups in just two clicks.

  • Everyone stays informed across sites, regions and countries — whether it's a global roadshow post from senior management, country-specific news or local production updates.

  • SAP HR integration since mid-2022 — this opens the app to all 72,000 employees worldwide; an initial password with standardised logic significantly simplifies sign-up for new users.

On the content side, the app is used as a mobile complement to the intranet for:

  • Global and country-specific intranet news

  • Posts from senior management

  • Press releases and company information

The Flip app enables short-notice changes and urgent matters to be communicated quickly and reliably — a genuine step away from the traditional "chain email" approach towards targeted, user-centred communication.

'The collaboration with Flip is going very well. We learn with each other and develop new features together to constantly optimize the app.'

Oksana Ugryn Referent Social Collaboration, MAHLE

Conclusion

Faster, simultaneous and equitable communication

With the introduction of the Flip employee app, MAHLE has improved not only reach, but also the speed and quality of internal communication:

  • Consistent information across teams and sites — all employees receive the same information at the same time, whether in the office, in production or abroad.

  • News and short-notice changes distributed easily via the app — response times for operational or strategic adjustments decrease significantly.

  • Mobile extension of the intranet as a leading channel — the app becomes the central touchpoint for everyone who doesn't sit at a PC all day.

The SAP HR integration ensures that the app is not only technically accessible to a handful of "digital early adopters", but to the entire workforce. This strengthens adoption and acceptance at all levels.
